interesting talk, originally uploaded by I like.

Such an inspiring talk from Anne, at interesting2007, backdropped by a mesmeric, meandering slideshow which reflected her unique view of the world.

So it's lovely to be able to read her script, which looks like it was scribbled out in 15 minutes flat.

Gum and Butts

Plodding around for a sandwich at lunchtime today I spotted a bunch of these pod-like contraptions bolted to lamposts all around the Holborn area.  Quite a neat idea to use existing street furniture, and obviously timed to be in place for the big extinguish on July 1st.  Well done, whoever it was (haven't found them yet)

The orange stickers seem to me to be susceptible to vandalism, though...  How long before those located on Old Compton Street are re-engineered to say Bum and Butts?

How on earth did we move from this straightforward, but neat, balanced, restrained and instantly identifiable logo...

Good UGC

Howies
Howies
Those eco-evangelist purveyors of nifty bike/skate clobber, Howies, are running their Art Think competition again this summer.  Yea!

This excellent UGC competition began a few years ago when Howies founders, David and Clare Hieatt, needed some point-of-sale materials for their stores around the country.  Up-and-coming artists were invited to paint a series of reclaimed wardrobes, along ecologically-minded themes such as 'organic cotton' 'junk mail', 'food miles', 'throwaway culture' etc.

They produced some truly covetable cupboards, that really reinforced the colourful, down-home, thoughtful and caring Howies positioning:

Following this success, they developed this 'thoughtful art' concept into an open-to-all competition - 'Art Think' - which has produced some spectacular results:

and this Spring's winner, on the subject of 'Climate Change'.

Wow....  great stuff.  Well done, Pal Hermansen.

Art Think Summer 2007 is based around the theme of 'Sport is Good', which feels like concept-rich territory.

I, for one, shall be mulling it over, and creating something to enter between now and October.

Call for Art-Think Entries - Summer 2007 Competition

The brief this time is: Sport is good.

Art-think (student)- Prize money £1k

Art-think (pro) - Prize money £1k

Closing date - 30th September

Apologies to all (ha!) my regular readers (ha!) for the recent dearth of posts.  Have been feeling extremely un-bloggy of late.  Post holiday blues, lots going on in the real world, and all that jazz.

Anyway, you'll be pleased (ha!) to know I've shrugged it all off and will be posting more regular slices of inconsequential bollocks from around the world.

All together now, "Hip Hip........................."

Oh dear.

Sadly not a new series of Brass Eye

Just another TV ad (sorry)

For Skoda, and it's very sweet.

Even though you can guess the endline after about 20 seconds, when it does finally reveal itself, it's so straightforward, and succinct, but also nicely vague, that you actually don't mind so much.

What do you think?

(oh, and thanks for spotting, GD)

Clever steps

Neat
Neat

The ever-brilliant Ben of the NoisyDecentGraphics blog recently spotted photos of these steps in a Rem Koolhaas building in Chicago.

A wonderfully simple (though probably absolute hell to build) way of integrating steps and wheelchair/pram ramp into one intruiging design.

So often access ramps are added as afterthoughts, cost a fortune to build, and look ugly as sin.

Not this one.

Good work, Rem.

(PS isn't Koolhaas just a brilliant name for an architect?)
